from 289 galleries and 40 countries globally

May 2022: Basel, the cultural hub of Switzerland, welcomes the return of Art Basel this month (17-19 June 2022). The world’s leading art fair is set to showcase a variety of works from emerging artists, art collectors and celebrities from an impressive 289 galleries and 40 countries globally.

Where classic modernism meets street art, visitors are invited to explore a variety of art forms from fine paintings, films and photography to installations and sculptures, with supporting artist and curator panel discussions.

New for this year is the Art Basel Weekend Package, offering visitors access to Art Basel and three parallel art fairs, including Liste for contemporary art, VOLTA for younger international galleries and Photo Basel for photography-based art. The package also includes a BaselCard for travel incentives and accommodation at a city-based hotel.

Art fanatics can further explore the Swiss culture capital and visit the city’s new ARTour Basel. Bringing ten works of art to life through augmented reality technology, the artworks have been curated by Sabine Himmelsbach and can be located in the heart of the city using the free, downloadable ARTour app and a smartphone camera.

For a relatively small city on the banks of the Rhine, Basel champions ingenuity in art, and outside of the Art Basel fair, visitors can still dedicate an entire weekend to just browsing the city’s best galleries. The Kunstmuseum Basel whose history dates back to 1661 is one of the world’s first museums and is a must see for art fans. The collection spanning art from the last 700 years includes pieces from Holbein’s Renaissance masterpieces to Van Gogh, Paul Klee and Picasso originals.

Basel is also known as Switzerland’s capital of architecture with a number of buildings designed by internationally-renowned architects. Nearby to the Old Town, visitors can spot architectural masterpieces such as Richard Meier, Frank Gehry and Mario Botta. The cultural city also has a vibrant theatre and music scene, attracting new talent, actors, directors and global stars where visitors can enjoy dance, music and acting from classic opera to modern stage shows.
