2023 adidas Manchester Marathon Runners Raise Record-Breaking £2.5 Million for Charity
Runners of the 2023 adidas Manchester Marathon have raised a staggering £2.5million for charity following the event which took place on April 16th.
3,750 people who took part in the event did so to raise funds for charity, with a staggering 90,000 donations recorded as a result of their efforts. Many of those participating for charity were supporting the event’s official charity partners; the Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation and Sense.
Each with their own story, some participants ran in memory of family and friends, while others ran to offer thanks and appreciation to local charities who have supported them through difficult times. The total amount raised betters the 2022 total of £1.9 million.
One of the largest individual fundraising attempts was led by BBC Race Across the World winner, Emon Choudhury, who has a goal of raising an incredible £7,777 for the Motor Neuron Disease Association (MNDA).
Emon was inspired to raise money for the charity after meeting Leeds Rhino legend Rob Burrows, who was diagnosed with MND in 2019. Emon’s fundraising challenge was coupled by a tremendous physical one as he ran the race during Ramadan, meaning he fasted without food or water on the day.
His efforts were paired with thousands of others, including firefighter Stephen McCann Jr who surpassed his target figure for the British Heart Foundation.
Andrew Smith, CEO of Human Race said: “It’s incredible to witness so many runners supporting various charities from across the UK and the amount raised this year is the highest in history. Running for charity is an admirable thing to do and we are really pleased to be able to facilitate this level of donation as part of our event.
“The marathon has always been a great way to raise vital funds for so many wonderful causes, and it’s amazing to see all the hard work and dedication that people put in. We’d like to thank all of our charity partners for their continued support and hope that the funds raised can make a significant difference for these, and many other charities across the UK.”
